Israeli President Reuven Rivlin announced on Tuesday that he had elected Benjamin Netanyahu to form the government once again. On March 23, elections were held in the country for the fourth time in two years. In this election no party got a majority nor any coalition was able to form a government. Let me tell you that in the last 70 years, no party has been able to get a majority in Israel so far.
Benjamin Netanyahu has 28 days to form a coalition after being elected by the president. Apart from this, if the need arises, then he can also ask for additional time of two weeks to form the government. During this time, if Netanyahu fails to form the government, then the President can give any other candidate a chance to form an alliance. The President consulted the parties that secured seats in the 120-member Parliament.
52 MPs recommended for Netanyahu’s name
In a consultation conducted by the Israeli President, 52 MPs recommended Netanyahu’s name. Former Finance Minister Yar Lapid’s 45 MPs and former Defense Minister Naphtali Bennett recommended seven MPs. Please tell that Netanyahu is facing a case of corruption and taking bribe. However, charges have not been proved against him in this case so far. Rivlin said that he is aware that a candidate facing criminal charges should not be the Prime Minister.
According to the law, Netanyahu should get a chance to form government
The President said that Israeli law says that a prime minister can continue his role even when he is facing charges. Rivlin said he believed in his decision that the ongoing criminal proceedings should not be a factor in Netanyahu becoming prime minister. Elections held on 23 March were held about whether the people would give Netanyahu the task of running the country again or not. Netanyahu’s Likud party won the most seats, but stayed away from the majority figure of 61 seats.
Netanyahu denied allegations of corruption
If no party gets a majority in the election, the President has announced to give all the candidates a chance to form the government. Second, Netanyahu, who is facing allegations of corruption, has denied the allegations against him. He said that some people are doing this to oust him from power.
