Hackers in Russia have been accused of stealing thousands of emails from US Department of State officials. The tense relationship between the US and Russia is expected to worsen after the matter unfolds. The American news agency Politico has printed this report citing two US lawmakers who are aware of the breach. Significantly, in the past, Russian hackers have been accused that they are trying to breach the data of American officials.
Quoting a third official, Politico said that Russian hackers had duped into the emails of officials working in the European, Eurasian, East Asian and Pacific Affairs Bureau of the State Department. But these hackers have not been able to reach the classified network. However, it is still not clear whether this cyber attack is part of the big SolarWinds hack campaign in December. Many US government agencies and private companies were targeted by hackers through SolarWinds.
US State Department did not provide any information
The US State Department has maintained silence on this matter. Its spokesperson refused to give information in this case citing security reasons. However, the spokesperson underlined that the Ministry takes the responsibility of keeping the information seriously and takes frequent steps in this direction. According to Politico, the attack shows that the scope of the US government data that Russian hackers had access to was quite large. It has also raised the question mark on the cybersecurity of the ministry.
Russian hackers responsible for SolarWinds attack
At the same time, US officials say that Russian hackers were responsible for the SolarWinds hack. The New York Times quoted US government sources as saying that Joe Biden was preparing to answer the cyber attack. However, Moscow brushed off the allegations. It said that Washington has not presented any evidence to prove its point.
