Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels fired missiles at Marib on Thursday, killing at least eight people and injuring 27. Yemen’s state news agency Sabah said a mosque and a women’s prison were targeted in Marib on Thursday. Houthi rebels fired four ballistic missiles (Missiles Attack) and dropped explosives with the help of drones. This is the second attack by Houthi rebels in Marib in a week.
Earlier on Saturday, at least 17 people, including a five-year-old girl, were killed in a missile attack by Houthi rebels targeting the government-held city of Marib. The city of Marib is currently controlled by an internationally recognized government. The rebels intend to take full control of the northern part of Yemen by capturing Marib. But they have not made any significant progress in this. Government forces backed by the Saudi-led coalition have given a tough fight to the rebels.
Allegation of Houthis, coalition forces are targeting their bases
Thursday’s attack was the second in a week. 17 people were killed in the attack late on Saturday night. A five-year-old girl was also among the dead. However, there was no immediate response from the Houthi rebels after this attack. The country’s Information Minister Moammar al-Iriani called on the United Nations and the United States to condemn Saturday’s attack. The Houthis have alleged that in the past two days, coalition forces have carried out about two dozen airstrikes in their areas.
Yemen is facing civil war
Houthi rebels occupy a large part of Yemen, which has been ravaged by civil war since 2014. As the civil war began, Iran-backed Houthi rebels took control of much of the northern part of the country and captured the capital, Sanaa. Because of this the internationally recognized government had to go into exile. At the same time, given the increasing interference of Iran in the region, the Saudi-led coalition entered the war on behalf of the government a year after the start of the civil war. More than 130,000 people have died in this war. It has created the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
