Aside from the enterprise at hand, occasions in China’s Great Hall of the People actually are a powerful spectacle.

Everything is carried out to perfection, from the synchronised tea pouring to the delegates clapping and even page-turning in unison.

The National People’s Congress (NPC) is an annual occasion that theoretically decides coverage and sometimes makes modifications to the structure.

But amid the present and ceremony, this 12 months has largely been in regards to the continued entrenching of the facility of 1 man, President Xi Jinping.

During this session, he has been confirmed to a precedent-busting third time period as president having beforehand performed away with the standard two-term restrict.

He has additionally succeeded in confirming a cupboard of staunch allies, most notably Li Qiang, the brand new second in command, a former protege and architect of the brutal and harmful Shanghai lockdown.

Gone are virtually all of the voices seen as holding marginally totally different views or approaches.

And it’s his agenda that has been pushed all through.

Changes, as an example, that proceed efforts to shift energy away from skilled “civil servants” and more and more into the palms of Communist Party cadres and Xi loyalists.

But maybe some of the enduring themes of this 12 months’s NPC has been China’s resolve amid an more and more tense standoff with the West and America specifically.

Earlier within the week Xi, with uncharacteristic bluntness, spoke of the West’s “all-around containment, encirclement and suppression of China”.

At the closing ceremony, he described how the Army must be a “Great Wall of Steel” against these forces. And the new foreign secretary made it clear that unless America “hits the brakes” on its provocation “battle and confrontation” will observe.

Be in little question the ramping up of rhetoric is deliberate and a part of Xi’s more and more assertive imaginative and prescient for China on the world stage.

There is a way that the drawing of battle strains is accelerating, and it is more and more arduous to see how both facet can again down.
