US Secretary of State Antoine Blinken
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will visit West Asia to lay the groundwork for a lasting peace dialogue after the Palestinian-Israeli Gaza ceasefire last week. US President Joe Biden has said that Blinken will leave for a brief tour of Israel, the West Bank, Jordan and Egypt on Monday.
This month, for the first time since the conflict between Israel and Palestine, the top ministers of the Biden administration are going for talks. Biden said in a statement that Blinken would also work with regional partners to ensure coordinated international efforts to help Gaza immediately.
Biden administration was criticized
The Biden administration was criticized initially for its lax attitude towards violence. Several Democratic Party leaders in Parliament were demanding a strong stand on the attack in response to the rocket firing of Palestinian militant groups in Israel and Gaza. The administration defended itself by saying that it was negotiating and making diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire.
Finally, a cease-fire was negotiated last week by Egyptian arbitration. Blinken said on Sunday that the Biden administration had tried to negotiate informally, which led to peace after 11 days.
Hamas took out parade
After an 11-day battle with Israel on Saturday, Hamas fighters in Gaza City demonstrated power by waving rifles and the group’s top leader came out in public for the first time. Saturday was the first day of the full truce. During this time Egyptian negotiators held talks to make the ceasefire sustainable.
During the eleven-day battle, Israel launched airstrikes targeting hundreds of Hamas targets in Gaza, while Hamas and other militant groups fired more than four thousand rockets towards Israel. During this period more than 250 people died, mostly Palestinians. Both Israel and Hamas are claiming their respective victories.
