On the night of March 25, 1971, the Pakistan Army started Operation Searchlight. After which the police and army massacred a lot.
Bangladesh celebrating 50th anniversary of independence
Bangladesh Independence From Pakistan: This year Bangladesh is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its independence. The day of 26 March is very important for the history of Bangladesh (26 March History) because on this day it was declared an independent nation separate from Pakistan. After separation from India, there used to be a large number of Sindhi, Pathan, Baloch and Mujahir people in the western region of Pakistan. While Bengali speaking people lived in its eastern region, it was known as East Pakistan. But this part has always been ignored. Due to which there was deep resentment towards Pakistan among the people living here.
The result of this resentment was the formation of the Awami League party of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the leader of East Pakistan. He demanded more autonomy for his region from Pakistan. This party also won in the elections held in 1970 and the party won a majority in Parliament. But Rahman was still put in jail. It was this incident that laid the foundation for the partition of Pakistan. A year later, in 1971, the then President of Pakistan, Yahya Khan, entrusted the responsibility of removing the resentment spread in this part to General Tikka Khan.
Pak Army started Operation Searchlight
Tikka Khan resorted to pressure to resolve the matter, which made the situation worse. On 25 March 1971, the Pakistan Army started Operation Searchlight. In this part, police and army massacred a lot. It is said that 30 million people were killed by the Pakistani army. After this massacre, Mukti Vahini was formed to provide freedom to Bangladesh, which included both soldiers and civilians.
Migrated to India
Meanwhile, people started migrating to India to escape the Pakistan Army and the police, India appealed to the international community several times to improve the conditions here. But no improvement was made. After which Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India, supported Mukti Vahini and decided to help Bangladesh for independence. In the month of July, training was started to help Mukti Vahini fighters. The Indian Army was preparing to deal with any situation.
Indira Gandhi’s visit to America
Between October and November, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and her advisors visited the US and Europe. He tried to keep the view of India in front of the world. But talks with the then US President Richard Nixon could not reach any conclusion. Where India wanted Mujib Rehman to be released, Nixon was advocating giving more time to the army of West Pakistan. However, India had made it clear that if any provocative action was taken by Pakistan, India would also give a befitting reply.
War started after Pakistan’s attack
On 23 November, the then President of Pakistan Yahya Khan asked to be prepared for war. Then on 3 December 1971 (India Pakistan 1971 War), Pakistan’s Air Force attacked India. This was the day when India too joined this war. Pakistan targeted many cities of India. Now the war between India and Pakistan had started (Bangladesh Independence War Against Pakistan in 1971). Pakistan bowed before India on 16 December. Bangladesh was born with the surrender of the Pakistan Army and the war ended.
