Researchers from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory have discovered from data from the ‘Mars Express Orbiter’ that there may be dozens of lakes under the surface of Mars.
Mars
Space agencies around the world are working to settle humans on Mars. But before settling on this planet, three basic things have to be arranged, which include air, water and food. About three years ago, one of these things was confirmed about the presence on the planet. Actually, about three years ago, scientists confirmed that there is a presence of water on the surface of Mars. At the same time, now a new study has claimed that there may be more water on Mars than we expected.
It has been said in this study that there may be dozens of lakes 800 meters below the surface of Mars. Researchers from the US space agency NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory have analyzed data from the European Space Agency’s ‘Mars Express orbiter’. If there are so many lakes on the surface of Mars, it will be a big discovery. In the coming years, many space agencies plan to send humans to Mars, so that the search for life there can be accelerated. In addition, human settlements can be settled.
Did scientists really find water?
The data showed that dozens of radar reflections were found at Mars’ South Pole. A similar search was done in 2018. The radar signals were found in the layered deposit region of the South Pole where water ice, dry ice and dust have accumulated over millions of years. However, most of these lakes are at a temperature where the water freezes, while the solid minerals are perchlorate. However, JPL investigator Geoffrey Plott says that it is not yet completely clear whether it is water or something else.
It is very difficult for water to remain liquid on Mars
More than 15 years of data were taken for this study. Earlier in March, a study found that 33 to 99 percent of the water not found on Mars may be under its crust. This study indicated that the rocks here may be billions of years old, in which water may be present. The surface temperature of Mars can be as low as -63 °C, in which it is very difficult for water to remain in the liquid state.
Where on the planet would the water come from
Doctoral student Aditya Khullar, who worked on this study, said that the water on the surface of Mars must have been formed due to volcanic activities. However, no evidence of this has been found at the south pole of the planet. At the same time, in May, researchers found evidence through satellite images that there may have been volcanic eruptions on the surface of Mars 50,000 years ago. Because of this, the presence of water on the planet may be there.
