Water corporations that dump sewage in rivers and seas will face fines of as much as £250m, the brand new setting secretary has mentioned.
Ranil Jayawardena instructed water corporations if they don’t do extra to stop waste flowing into open water, he’ll usher in an as much as 1,000-fold enhance in civil fines.
“On my first day in office I met water company bosses to give them their report card. I’ll be polite: could do better,” he was set to inform the Conservative Party convention in Birmingham on Monday.

“And, if they don’t deliver, I can confirm to you today that we will take forward plans to lift the Environment Agency’s maximum civil fine for each individual breach of the rules from up to just £250,000, to up to £250m.”
The plan entails launching a proper session on lifting the present £250,000 cap for Environment Agency fines for water corporations that breach environmental guidelines.
There has been rising public outrage on the quantity of uncooked or partially handled sewage pumped into the UK’s rivers and coastal waters.
Water corporations are being criticised for not investing a reimbursement into the UK’s outdated water infrastructure, with mounting strain on ministers to intervene.
