A fire broke out on its surface in the middle of the ocean west of the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico. The fire was extinguished immediately after getting information about the incident. Mexico’s state-owned oil company Pemex said, the fire in the sea has been extinguished. The company has attributed the fire to a gas leak from an underwater pipeline. This video of fire in the sea quickly went viral on social media.
In the video going viral, it can be seen that bright orange flames are rising above the surface of the sea like a flowing lava. People named it ‘eye of fire’. It was given this name because of the circularity of the flames. The fire broke out on Friday, just a short distance from the Pemex oil platform. Pemex said it took more than five hours to extinguish the fire.

No casualties in fire incident: Pemex
Four sources told Reuters news agency that the fire started in an underwater pipeline that connects to Pemex’s flagship Ku Maloob Zaap oil development platform. Ku Malub Jaap is located near the southern rim of the Gulf of Mexico. Pemex says that no one was injured in the incident and the gas leak has not affected production through the project.
Pemex has a long record of industrial accidents
The company said that the fire started at 5.15 am local time on Friday and was brought under control by 10.30 am. Pemex has said the company will investigate the cause of the fire. Pemex has a long record of major industrial accidents at its facilities. It said the valves of the 12-inch diameter pipeline have been closed following the fire.
Ku Malub accounts for 40 percent of Pemex’s oil production
Angel Carriless, head of Mexico’s ‘oil safety regulator’ ASEA, tweeted that there was no oil spill due to this incident. But he did not tell what was burning on the surface of the water. Ku Malub Jaap is Pemex’s largest crude oil producer. About 40 percent of the company’s daily oil production of about 1.7 million barrels comes from Ku Malub. A source said the turbomachinery at Ku Malub Jaap’s production facility was hit by a lightning storm and heavy rain. The company’s employees extinguished the fire with the help of nitrogen.
