The Joe Biden Administration of America on Friday banned 22 senior officials and their family members due to the government’s crackdown on pro-democracy protesters after the coup in Myanmar. The US government has announced a ban on seven members of the Myanmar military and 15 members of their families.
The US imposed this restriction in response to the February coup in Myanmar and crackdown on protesters in the country. Apart from this, the sanctions imposed earlier on three Iranian officials were lifted. The US Treasury Department said that the military’s suppression of democracy and its campaign of brutal violence against the people of Myanmar is unacceptable.
America will continue to impose fines
The statement said the US would continue to impose fines against Myanmar’s military. Restrictions have been imposed against several senior ministers including Myanmar’s Information Minister Chit Neng, Labor Minister, Social Welfare Minister. The property of these officers in the US jurisdiction will be blocked and the American people will not be able to do any kind of business with them.
The department did not provide any explanation for lifting sanctions on three Iranian officials, but officials said similar steps had been taken in the past. The previous Donald Trump administration had banned Iran’s Behzad Daniel Ferdos, Behzad Daniel Ferdos and Mohammad Reza Dejafulian.
Myanmar begins release of 2,300 prisoners
In the past, Myanmar’s military government began releasing some 2,300 prisoners, including activists detained during protests against a military coup in February, and journalists reporting on demonstrations. This information was given by the officials. Inmates were taken by buses from Yangon’s Insein prison, where their friends and family had been waiting for their release since morning.
The head of the Yangon Regional Prison Department, Jae Jae, confirmed that more than 720 people had been released from prison. Political prisoners have been kept in this jail for decades. It was revealed that not all activists and journalists have been released (Myanmar Military Government). Deputy Information Minister Major General Jae Min Tun had earlier said that around 2,300 prisoners would be released across the country.
