UN Chief on Central South Asia Countries: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that the countries of Central and South Asia can fully take advantage of the potential opportunities here only if there is peace in the region. He underscored the promise of connectivity, saying it should be strong enough to act as a “counterbalance” to reduce the risk of further worsening of the situation in war-torn Afghanistan.
Guterres said in a video message at a high-level international conference on Friday in Tashkent, Uzbekistan’s capital, ‘Central and South Asia: Regional Connectivity’, “Connectivity is vital to business, economic growth and sustainable development.” , but connectivity is not limited to economics (Central and South Asia). It also establishes regional cooperation and friendly relations between neighbours.
Opportunities can be availed in peace
“A system of connectivity that is also environmentally friendly and based on rules that can contribute to lasting peace, stability and prosperity in Central and South Asia” (Antonio Guterres on Central and South Asia) ). These things have become more important and necessary now than before. He said that Central and South Asia can benefit from the potential opportunities only if there is peace in the region.
Urges countries to strengthen contacts
Guterres called on countries to better understand the various dimensions of peace so that the promise of connectivity in the region remains strong enough to create a ‘counterbalance’ mechanism against the threat of further worsening of the situation in Afghanistan. He said that this conference is very important to work in this direction and the United Nations is ready to help in this regard. His remarks come at a time when conflict between Afghan forces and Taliban militants has intensified in Afghanistan after the US began the withdrawal of its forces.
