The UK government has decided to ban the airing of junk food advertisements on TV etc. from 5:30 am to 9 pm. These rules related to Junk Food Ads will be applicable from next year. This is the purpose of this ban so that children should be least exposed to harmful food.
Public consultations were held on this issue. These rules will be applicable from the end of 2022. Under these, the telecast on advertisements of such food items will be banned from 5.30 am to 9.00 pm which are high in fat, salt and sugar (HFSS). The new rules will apply to demand-based programs in TV, UK. Along with this, the ban will also be applicable on the online medium.
The effect of seeing on habits
It is part of a wider campaign to combat obesity in children. Joe Churchill of the UK Department of Health said that we are committed to improving children’s health and tackling obesity. He said that the content that the youth sees affects their preferences and habits. Children are spending more time online, so we have taken steps to protect them from harmful advertisements.
He said that these measures are another part of our strategy to keep the country fit and healthy and it will give them a chance to take a well thought out decision about food. This restriction will be applicable to all businesses manufacturing or selling HFSS which have 250 or more workers. This means that small and medium businesses will be able to advertise.
