Australia’s High Commissioner to India, Barry O’Farrell, on Monday congratulated the Indian women’s hockey team on reaching the Olympic semi-finals. The Indian women’s hockey team defeated Australia 1-0 in the Tokyo Olympics today. In this way she reached the semi-finals of the Olympics for the first time. Praising Team India’s defense, Farrell said that goalkeeper Savita Punia stood like the ‘Great Wall of India’ and her defense could not be pierced.

Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, reacting to India’s victory in both men’s and women’s categories, congratulated both the teams for reaching the semi-finals.

Sports Minister Anurag Thakur said, ‘Both our hockey teams performed brilliantly. Our congratulations and best wishes to them. On behalf of 135 crore Indians, we also wish them all the best for the upcoming important games. PV Sindhu won the bronze medal yesterday. Mirabai Chanu had earlier won the silver medal. Lovlina gave a great performance. This has given hope to India. I am happy that the daughters of India have won two medals so far. Women’s hockey team performed brilliantly today, men’s hockey team also gave a great performance.

Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju also congratulated the hockey teams. Former Sports Minister Rijiju said, ‘It is a big day for India, both our hockey teams have reached the semi-finals and it is a big achievement. When both the men’s and women’s teams were in Bangalore, we used to go there and meet them. Whenever we used to interact with him, our confidence was always high. We always believed that we will reach the semi-finals, just two more steps are left, but reaching the semi-finals is a big achievement.
