Dhaka. President Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday said it is time to further raise the level of “deep friendship” between India and Bangladesh. He said India is committed to assist Bangladesh in realizing the full benefits of the bilateral relationship. “History will always bear witness to this unique foundation of our friendship, which liberated Bangladesh,” Kovind said at an event in Parliament to commemorate the birth centenary year and victory day of Bangladesh’s founder Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Earlier, President Kovind attended the Vijay Diwas Parade as a special guest. He said that India has always given top priority to its friendship with Bangladesh. “We are committed to doing everything we can to realize the full potential of our friendship,” he said.
In recent years, trade, economic cooperation, people-to-people contacts, student exchanges and engagement between the two neighbors have expanded in various fields. “These are the guarantees of an enduring, deep friendship based on mutual respect, sovereign equality and our respective long-term interests,” Kovind said.

The events are being organized to commemorate 50 years of India-Bangladesh relations along with the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Bangladesh’s independence from Pakistan. The President said that if “the first 50 years of our partnership began with overcoming extraordinary challenges that built close friendships between our peoples, it is time to raise it even further.”
In order to achieve this, Kovind said that both the countries should be encouraged to jointly take globally leading initiatives in the world of ideas, creativity, commerce and technology by mobilizing businesses, academia and especially the youth. “Our innovators should be urged to find innovative solutions based on locally appropriate technologies to address our shared development challenges,” the president said.
