A climbing guide said on Saturday that the Coronavirus Outbreak on Mount Everest has infected at least 100 climbers and Supporting Staff. This is the first major estimate amid the official Nepali rebuttal of the COVID-19 cluster at the world’s highest peak.
Lucas Fürtenbach of Austria is the only organization to stop his Everest expedition due to the virus last week. He said that one of his foreign guides and six Nepali Sherpa guides have been found positive. He said that I have positive tests so we can prove it. Furthenbach gave information about this while talking to news agency AP in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu.
People were coughing inside the camps
He said that at least 100 people in the base camp are COVID positive and this number can be 150 or even 200. Fuertenbach said that it is clear that there were many cases at Everest Base Camp because he saw that people were sick and coughing inside their camps. A total of 408 foreign climbers were issued permits to climb Everest this season, assisted by several hundred Sherpa guides and support staff stationed at the base camp since April.
Nepalese mountaineering officials have ruled out any active case this season between climbers and support staff at all base camps for the country’s Himalayan mountains. Although the other climbing teams have not announced any COVID infection among their members or staff, many of the climbers have been tested positive after being brought down from Everest Base Camp. Let us know that the mountaineering was stopped last year due to Corona epidemic.
Teams waiting for clear weather
Fuertenbach said that most teams on the mountain did not have a virus testing kit, and before their team moved out, they assisted in the test and confirmed two cases. He said that most of the teams are still in the base camp and hope to clear the weather next week so that they can reach the summit before the end of the climbing season ends at the end of the month.
