US Refers to Taiwan as Country: Several cases are being disputed between the US and China. Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has addressed Taiwan as a ‘country’. Earlier, the US authorities had avoided Taiwan from speaking the country. He has said this in the Foreign Affairs Committee. Blinken said this while replying to Republican Representative Yang Kim from California. Kim said that the US should include Taiwan in the upcoming democracy summit.
Blinken said, ‘I want to share your opinion that Taiwan is a strong democracy, a strong technical force and a country that can contribute not only to its people but also to the world.’ The State Department has avoided writing ‘country’ to Taiwan in the unwritten policy, it has been addressing it as a self-governing island. This is done keeping in mind the One China Policy.
China claims
At the same time, China describes Taiwan as its territory, while there are different governments on either side. China’s interference in Taiwan is increasing day by day, which Taiwan expresses in clear terms. However, the US expresses its full support with Taiwan. In recent months, China has increased its military activity in the area of Taiwan. In November, the US and Taiwan signed a blueprint for economic relations in Washington. One of the reasons for the tension between China and the US is the American support to Taiwan. Chinese President Xi Jinping has also clarified his intention regarding Taiwan.
What does Taiwan say?
Last month, President Sai Ing-wen of Taiwan on US China said that his country’s relationship with the US remains strong amid changes in the US administration. This statement came at a time when the US Navy is increasing its presence in the South China Sea. Sai Ing-wen had said that a large number of military aircraft are being sent by China to Taiwan’s southwest airspace but despite this, US military support remains intact. He had said, “I would like to say that Taiwan will not bow under pressure and will not move in a hurry by getting support.”
