Newspaper editor gets a letter
The 90s was in its last phase. After a few years, a new decade and a new century were about to begin. The year was 1999, when the editor of an Urdu newspaper in Lahore received a letter. It was written in the letter, ‘I Javed Iqbal, I have killed 100 children and strangled their dead bodies in acid. Most of these children ran away from their homes or were orphans. The letter also gave details of the place where this ‘heinous crime was carried out.
After reading this letter, the editor of the newspaper became conscious. He sent one of his journalists to the place mentioned in the letter. The journalist found children’s shoes and clothes in a bag of blood and a bag there. The journalist also found a diary on the spot, which had written about the children whom Javed had made his ‘victim’. Javed had also sent a similar letter to the Lahore police, but the police did not take it seriously.
Javed Iqbal reached for an interview
The journalist watching the crime scene caught sight of two big containers. These included hydrochloric acid and the structure of children’s bones. The journalist gave this information to the editor, after which the police were informed and the world came to know about Javed. The police arrived at the scene and started collecting evidence when the police found another diary in the hand which said that I had left some corpses as evidence, which I could not locate. Javed wrote that I am going to commit suicide by jumping in Ravi river. After reading this, the police started investigating Javed. It is said that this was the largest search operation in Pakistan.
The police engaged in the investigation and took two friends of Javed who were arrested and started interrogation. One of these friends committed suicide during interrogation. The police were looking for the end of this puzzle that Javed reached the office of Urdu newspaper and started asking for an interview. Javed told the editor that he had come to surrender. After all, Javed Iqbal was interviewed, at the end of which he was arrested.
Explained to the police the reason for the murder
During the interrogation, Javed gave the reason for the killings. Describing his ’cause’ as a ‘sentimental story’, Javed said that at the age of 20, he was sent to jail on the basis of false allegations of rape. His mother used to come to visit him in jail and pray for the release of his son. Javed said that while waiting for the son’s release and shedding tears, finally one day his mother died. After this, he vowed that he would also force 100 children to cry to their mothers. From then on, he started killing innocent children.
Admitting his crime in front of the police, Javed said that he would first take the children to his house in Shadbagh, Lahore, where he raped them and then strangled them with an iron chain and killed them. Javed would cut the corpse into small pieces and strangled them in the acid. He would throw the remaining remains of the corpse into the river. Javed confessed his crime to the police and finally, the court sentenced him to death on 16 March 2000.
Court judgment condemned
The court said in its judgment that the way Javed brutally murdered 100 children, in the same way, his throat should be strangled 100 times, 100 pieces of his corpse should be cut and he should be strangled in acid. This decision of the court was opposed all over the world and finally, the court had to change its decision and Javed was sentenced to death.
Javed’s story does not end here. In Kot Lakhpat Jail on the morning of 8 October 2001, the jail administration found two dead bodies hanging on the roof of the roof. These dead bodies belonged to Javed Iqbal and his companions. The arms and legs of both were completely blue. It is said that both were murdered in jail. They were poisoned and hung from the roof bars with the help of a sheet. Although the jail administration termed it a suicide, but many jail staff were suspended in this case.
