Sewer lines are laid in cities and metros of the world, so that contaminated waters can be transported to their right places. But an accident in Mexico showed how dangerous it can prove to be if the sewer line is not taken care of properly. On this day, 10 explosions occurred in one sewer line in the city of Guadalajara in the state of Jalisco, Mexico. More than 250 people died due to these blasts, while more than 1000 buildings were damaged.
It was told that the blast happened due to leaking of gas pipes lying in the sewer line. The warning of gas leaks was ignored by the authorities and the National Oil Company, which became the reason for this accident. After the explosion in the sewer system, the fire broke out for about four hours and the road of about eight kilometers was completely ruined. More than 600 people went missing in this accident, while thousands of people became homeless. This accident also exposed the poor system of Mexico.
Gas leaks caused burning sensation in people’s eyes
Three days before the explosion, the residents of Guadalajara city felt the smell of gas in the air. Due to gas leaks, people started burning eyes and throat. Some people started having vomiting due to gas. The locals complained to the authorities. But the lice would not get caught on the officers’ ears and they did not investigate the matter properly. Whatever happened after this, it came in front of everyone like a terrible accident.
Two 300-foot pits in the blast city
On 22 April 1992, a series of powerful explosions began at 11.30 am. These blasts started in a mile long area and the blasts were happening from 35 feet below ground including the sewer system. The 20 blocks of Guadalajara became completely grounded. Two 300-foot pits were built at two places in the city. Due to this, buildings, roads, cars and buses located around these pits merged into it. It took more than a week to make a record of the number of people killed and injured. About 1,500 people were admitted to the hospital and 25 thousand people were shifted to safe places.
… So the explosion happened because of this
According to official figures, 252 people died in this blast. More than 600 people went missing in this accident. At the same time, more than 500 people were injured due to the blast, while 15,000 people became homeless. It is said that there was a loss of 300 million dollars (about 250 crore rupees) due to this accident. An investigation found that dirty water was seeping from the sewer line and falling on the gas pipeline passing below it. Because of this, the gas pipe got rusted and started leaking, which later caused the explosion.
