Earthquake tremors are felt in different parts of the world. Due to the movement in tectonic plates within the earth, it starts vibrating on its surface, it is known as earthquake. Till now, millions of people have died due to earthquake of earthquakes all over the world. Usually everyday people in some part of the world have to suffer from earthquake tremors. The shock of one such earthquake occurred in Turkey about 51 years ago, in which more than one thousand people died.
March 28, 1970 is no less than a black date for people living in Gediz District of Kütahya Province, Turkey. On this day, an earthquake struck such a tremendous earthquake that thousands of people lost their lives. At the same time, more than a thousand people were not destined to see the faces of their loved ones again. On this day, a magnitude 7.2 on the Richter Scale shook the geddies. This earthquake came at 11 o’clock at night, due to which many people died due to being buried under the rubble of the houses.
People came out of homes after earthquake tremors
The day of March 28 was passing like a common day for the people living in Geddes. But during the night, there were strong tremors of earthquake here. Due to this, there was chaos in the whole area. Eight thousand people lived in this town, located 800 miles from the capital Ankara. Due to the night, many people were still sleeping. After feeling the shock of the earthquake, people came out of their houses and took to the streets. Eyewitnesses said that on seeing some old houses located in the area, they started falling in front of the eyes.
Dozens of people died due to fire
The tremors were so strong that in a few minutes more than half of the houses in the city had been submerged. Those who were trapped in these houses died under the rubble. Many people died due to burns only. Actually, the earthquake overturned the stoves placed in people’s homes and caught fire. This caused flames in the houses. At the same time, when people tried to escape from this, they failed to get out of the earthquake damaged house. In this way many people were killed only due to fire.
1,086 people died
There were 254 small and big villages in the entire Gedidge district. The earthquake had a tremendous impact on them. More than half of the houses in the district were completely destroyed by the vibration of the earth. As soon as the information of the incident was sent to the relief and rescue team. The team said that more than nine thousand houses have either been turned into ruins or they have been broken. The rescue team started removing the corpses of the people trapped in the rubble. At the same time, the injured were sent to the hospital for treatment. At the end of the relief work, 1,086 people were killed and 1,260 people were badly injured.
The government settled people in a new city
Turkey’s Gediz district always suffered from natural disasters. Earthquake and flood events were frequent here. For this reason, the government passed a resolution after the earthquake in 1970 and built a new town named ‘Yeni Gediz’, seven kilometers from here. Here earthquake-resistant houses were built and the people of Geddes were sent to live here. The houses were rebuilt in nearby towns and villages.
