December 4, 1971. This day is celebrated as Navy Day in India. In the coming times, this day will also be remembered for the commission of Shivangi, the first female pilot of the Indian Navy. This day is also remembered for another historical event. On December 4, 1971, for the Ghazi attack.
Ghazi Attack Story
In 1971, there was a war between India and Pakistan. The fight was the independence of East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). At that time, Pakistan was mutilated in East Pakistan. There was news on the day of rape and murder. India was ready to liberate East Pakistan. His freedom meant strategic stability in the Bay of Bengal region for India. This fight between the two countries was going on on land as well as on water. The Ghazi attack took place during this battle. In this attack, the Indian Navy drowned the most powerful and powerful submarine of the Pakistani Navy, the PNS Ghazi. 90 Pakistani soldiers were killed in the drowning of Ghazi. But, this is true of the Indian Navy. Pakistan has been saying that Ghazi was drowned by the explosion of the mine he laid. Both countries present their arguments, but the truth is that most documents related to Ghazi attacks have been finished.
What happened on 3-4 December?
In the 70s, the condition of Pakistan’s Navy was good, India also used to power its navy. Pak had Submarine Ghazi, which he had taken from America. At that time it was one of the most powerful submarines of South East Asia and India was well aware of its strength. In 71, when the two countries were thirsty for each other’s blood, Pakistan planned to demolish India’s INS Vikrant by sending its largest submarine to the Bay of Bengal. This was a huge risk because Ghazi had to come directly from Karachi Harbor (which falls in the west) to the Bay of Bengal in the east. On the east, the Indian Navy was in a very good position. But, they say that in war, humans and countries put their all at stake. Pak also did the same.
Ghazi INS set out to demolish Vikrant
Gazi set out for sale on 14 November 1971. There were 90 soldiers in this submarine. Ghazi spilled mines to drown Vikrant. He was sure that he would finish Vikrant. India got aware of this plan of Pakistan. When Ghazi went from Karachi, the Pakistan Navy gave a message to the Chittagong Navy in East Pakistan for a special oil. It was a lubricant used in Submarine and Minesweeper. The Indian Navy caught this message. Submarine’s name became clear when it was discovered that these people were searching for special oil. As soon as the Indian Navy got a glimpse of it, they made a new plan. He sent Vikrant, a little below the Bay of Bengal, to the Andaman Islands and posted INS Rajput in place of Vikrant.
Rajput was an old ship, dating back to World War 2. He was sent to India for Decommission. Decommissioning a ship means opening its parts. Now Rajput was posted on Vikrant’s position, the plan was to cheat the Pakistan Navy. Such signals were sent continuously, which made it seem that Rajput is rightly Vikrant. Some important secrets were also leaked, so that Ghazi would be convinced that this is Vikrant.
That night the insanity of war killed 90 soldiers
On the other hand, Ghazi had reached Visakhapatnam. He laid mines in the sea. He was sure that Vikrant would be drowned by the blast of his mines. but that did not happen. Conversely, Ghazi itself drowned and 90 of its soldiers were killed. how? Ghazi became so confused due to an incorrect signal from Rajput that he returned to the same path where he laid the mines. Usually the Army or Navy never go back from their laid out path, but Ghazi took this risk. The signal to be around Ghazi was found by Rajput captain Inderjit Singh, he immediately gave orders to fire two. Order complied, fired and Ghazi collapsed. Ghazi was drowned.
For many years, the Indian Army has just told the truth about Ghazi. But, according to Pakistan, Ghazi was drowned by the explosion of its own mines and not by the fire of the Indian Navy. This victory of India over Pakistan is considered to be one of the biggest fates of the Indian Navy. Who was telling the truth, to this day there is doubt. But, there is also a truth that the insanity of the war that night killed 90 soldiers.
