Archaeologists in Egypt have discovered hundreds of rock-cut tombs. Some of these tombs are more than four thousand years old. In total, the sites with 250 graves have been searched. A regular archaeological survey was being carried out at the Al-Hamidiyyah cemetery near Sohag on the west bank of the Nile River, during which these tombs were discovered. Researchers say that these mausoleums have been used for a period of about 2000 years from 2200 BCE to 30 BCE.
Showing different styles, these tombs have been carved by cutting stones at different levels of the mountain. Researchers said that a mausoleum had a fake door with a hieroglyph. In this picture, people mourning on behalf of the deceased were making offerings to the deities. Mustafa Waziri, general secretary of the ‘Supreme Council for Antiquities’, said that some of these tombs had more than one grave. At the same time, some had a ramp, which used to go in a cemetery chamber.
Small burial chambers found inside the mausoleum
According to the report of the Daily Mail, one of these mausoleums is four thousand years old, which is of the time of the decline of the ancient empire. This tomb has an entrance, which leads to a cross-hall. There is a small burial chamber here. According to Waziri, this chamber must have been used for many centuries. He said about the hieroglyphic hanging on the fake door in this tomb, that it shows that the animals must have been sacrificed to make an offering to God on behalf of the deceased.
Ancient pieces found inside the mausoleum
Researchers have found bones of humans and animals after digging in these mausoleums. Also pottery and other ancient pieces have also been found. These pieces and utensils must have been used during the funeral. Apart from this, some pots, round metal glass pieces and some small utensils have been found. Archaeologists believe that inscriptions found on limestone fragments depict people buried in tombs. Some of these people may have been buried around the sixth dynasty of Egypt from around 2345 to 2181 BCE.
Tomb used until the time of the construction of the pyramids
Archaeologists have speculated that these sites must have been used from the period of the Old Kingdom to about two thousand years. During that time the Great Pyramid of Giza was being built. The Smithsonian magazine reported that it must have been used by the end of the Ptolemaic dynasty at the time of Cleopatra’s death in 30 BCE. Waziri said that researchers have already documented more than 300 graves in the area.
