The reason behind the strengthening of Taliban in Afghanistan has always been its whereabouts in Pakistan. Now a senior US lawmaker has also confirmed this. Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Jack Reed said that the reason behind the establishment of the Taliban’s roots in Afghanistan is its shelters in Pakistan. Significantly, a day earlier, Washington announced plans to withdraw all its troops from the war-torn country by September 11.
Jack Reid said in Parliament, “The major contribution to the success of the Taliban is the fact that the US has failed to eliminate the Taliban’s hideout in Pakistan.” Citing a recent study, Reid said that the Taliban have a refuge in Pakistan. Support from the government there through organizations such as Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) is necessary to continue the Taliban war. America’s failure to destroy these shelters is Washington’s biggest mistake in this war.
ISI extends support to Taliban even while supporting America
The US lawmaker said, as the Afghan Study Group (working under Congress’s directive) said that these shelters are necessary for terrorism. Apart from this, Pakistan’s ISI also helped the Taliban by collaborating with the US to exploit the opportunities. Reid said that Pakistan provided direct military and intelligence support as per the 2018 assessment. As a result of this, American soldiers, Afghan security force soldiers and civilians were killed and there was a lot of destruction in Afghanistan.
Pakistan has taken advantage of both America and Taliban
Jack Reid said, “This support to the Taliban is contradictory to the US support by Pakistan.” They also allowed the use of their airspace and other infrastructures, for which the US has provided a lot of financial help. Reid said, according to the Afghan Study Group, Pakistan tried to take advantage of both sides. He also said that Pakistan itself is getting weaker with all this and it is dangerous due to its nuclear weapons.
America failed to form a confident government in Afghanistan
According to Reid, on top of all this, Pakistan has been in conflict with its neighbor India for a long time and India is also a country endowed with nuclear weapons. The senator said that Pakistan and India have been involved in the conflict in South Asia for a long time. He said that one of the reasons behind the decision of the withdrawal of troops of the US and its coalition partners from Afghanistan is that they could not form an Afghan government that could gain public confidence and go beyond cities to safety, education, health and justice. Including basic services.
