Burqa Ban by Countries: The Sri Lankan cabinet has approved the ‘disputed proposal’ a day ago, under which the wearing of niqab or burqa in public places is prohibited. In March, the Public Safety Minister of this country, Sarath Weerasekara, signed a document and demanded the cabinet to pass the proposal. Sri Lanka has termed the nakab or burqa a threat to national security. But Sri Lanka is not the only country to do so, shortly before this a referendum has been held in Switzerland. More than 51 percent of the people here voted in favor of banning the burqa.
Such a law is also applicable in China (Burqa Ban China) but it is only partially implemented in Xinjiang province. Apart from this, in many other countries of Europe, the burqa is banned or completely banned. These countries include the Netherlands, France, Austria, Germany, Belgium and Denmark. Germany, France and Denmark have implemented many other restrictions to curb radical activities. Let us now talk about those countries, where wearing any kind of mask is prohibited in public places.
France
France banned the burqa in 2011 by bringing a law. The act was approved in the Senate here on 14 September 2010. This law prohibits the use of masks, helmets, masks and other types of clothing to cover the face (France Burqa Ban). This ban was severely criticized, people raised issues like immigration, nationalism, secularism and security. Advocates of the ban had termed face covering a threat to security. To avoid allegations of discrimination, no specific religion has been mentioned in the law.
Belgium
Here, everything covering the face including the burqa is banned from the year 2011. Those who break the rules can be fined and imprisoned for a minimum of seven days in jail. The number of Muslims here is close to a million, of which only 300 are those who wear the burqa or mask (Burqa Ban Belgium). Therefore, not many people have been affected by this government ban.
Denmark
The burqa has been banned in Denmark since August 2018. The law was approved by lawmakers here in May this year. 75 MPs voted in favor of the law and 30 against. If someone violates it, he is fined 135 euros (about 12114 rupees). However, if someone violates it more than once, then there is a provision for other punishments for it.
Austria
Austrian law says that people cannot cover their face from their hair to their chin. Violation of this law brought against the mask here can lead to a fine of 150 euros (about 13460 rupees) (Burqa Ban Austria). This restriction is in force from the year 2017.
Bulgaria
Wearing a burqa is banned in Bulgaria from the year 2016. Those violating this may have to pay a fine of 750 Euro (about 67300 rupees). Although some people have been exempted from this, there is no denial if someone uses a burqa or mask to avoid dusty soil, working in the open, or while praying in the house.
Netherlands
In the Netherlands there is a ban on face covering in public places, for doing so, a fine of at least 150 euros (about 13460 rupees) can be imposed. This rule also applies to burqas, full face helmets and balletclavs. A balletclav is one that is commonly used by commandos. But this kind of restriction in the law is only for the common people. The ban came into force in the Netherlands after a 14-year debate.
