TS Tirumurti, Permanent Representative of India to the UN
India at United Nations: India has emphasized the need for its localization to achieve the 2030 agenda of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It has said that one thing is not appropriate in all circumstances, but countries can certainly share their experiences and learn from each other. India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations TS Tirumurti asked ‘How can no one be left behind by the localization of the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals)? India’s stand has been clarified at a high level political forum on the subject.
He said that localization efforts will make the road to implementation of the 2030 Agenda easier despite the COVID-19 global pandemic. “In large countries like India with a population of 1.3 billion, the localization of SDGs is essential for the 2030 agenda to be successful,” he said. Tirumurti said that fragmentation of targets and implementation at sub-national and local levels is the only way through which SDG targets can be achieved.
Ease of finding solutions to challenges
Localization also helps to find local solutions to local challenges by empowering the government at the provincial and local levels (Localization of SDGs). “One thing is not appropriate for all circumstances for localisation, rather we can share experiences and learn from each other,” he said. Tirumurti said the global pandemic threatens to disrupt the ‘decade of action’.
Civil society organizations also involved
He said, ‘We need to work together to ensure that all countries, especially vulnerable countries, can stick to their goal of achieving the 2030 SDG Agenda.’ The Indian Ambassador said that NITI Aayog handles the overall coordination for the implementation of the SDGs in India. The localization process of SDGs is not limited to government intervention but also includes civil society organizations.
