Hefazat-E-Islam Leader Mamunul Haque Arrested in Bangladesh: A fundamentalist religious leader associated with an Islamic group in Bangladesh has been arrested on Sunday for inciting violence in the country. Officials reported that a joint team of police and detectives raided an Islamic seminary in Mohammadpur today and joint general secretary of an organization called ‘Hefazat e Islam’, according to the newspaper ‘Dhaka Tribune’. Haque), who had recently been in the news for some controversies.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Joint Commissioner (Intelligence Branch) Mehboob Alam said that 47-year-old Haq was arrested at around 12.30 pm. Officials said that the students and teachers of the madrasa tried to stop the raids by demonstrating (Bangladesh Protests). However, Haq has been arrested from a room in the first floor of the madrasa. Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Haroon ur Rashid said that Haq and other leaders of his organization are accused in many cases including attacks and vandalism on law enforcement officers and police stations. These cases are being investigated.
Mamunul Haque is also accused of threatening
In the past, Haq came into the limelight when he made controversial comments regarding the statues. In November last year, he said that the work of installing the statue of Bang Bandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Dholipar in the capital should be stopped immediately. Meanwhile, a Dhaka-based court has sent the seven-day remand of Dhaka city president Junaid Al Habib and the organization’s assistant general secretary Jalaluddin today in connection with the violence in 2013, which was arrested on Saturday.
Violence erupted during PM Modi’s visit
During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bangladesh last month, members of Hifazat-e-Islam demonstrated and attacked government buildings (Bangladesh Protests Over PM Moid Visit). These people clashed with the security forces. During the violent demonstrations some protesters were killed and dozens of people were injured.
