A total of about 260 airstrikes were carried out by Japan on Chongqing. It is said that from dozens of bomber planes to 150 planes used to bomb Chongqing every time. When the air raid was carried out on June 5, the residents of Chongqing hid in a bomb shelter. But when Japan dropped the bomb on this tunnel, at least four thousand people present here died. Most of these people died due to suffocation. This incident is known as the Chongqing massacre. Sino-Japanese relations have been strained for decades because of other similar attacks.
People hiding in tunnel to escape Japanese bombing
At the beginning of the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1938, the Japanese began bombing the new capital of China, Chongqing (Chungqing). During the five-year campaign, Japanese airstrikes killed at least 11,889 people, injured 14,100 people and destroyed 17,608 buildings, according to the Chongqing municipal government. Chongqing had grown in size since it became the new capital of China in 1938. But when the Japanese bombardment began, about a million people were killed. These people were unarmed and because of this many of them took refuge in the only hiding place in the city to escape.
…when the Japanese hurled bombs on the tunnel
However, Japan was continuously bombing this city. The worst bombing took place on June 5, 1941, which lasted for three hours. To avoid this, about four thousand people went to hide in the tunnel ‘Jiaochangkou Tunnel’ built in the center of the city. But the Japanese had come to know about this tunnel and they bombarded it fiercely. Because of this, the people hiding inside the tunnel were killed. At the same time, some people who survived this attack, died due to suffocation. These people hoped that the air raid would stop and these people would come out. But this did not happen and these people died of suffocation.
