Major General Babar Iftikhar said on Saturday that due to the situation in Afghanistan, there is a danger of re-activation of the terrorist sleeper cell. According to Pakistani media Geo TV, his statement has come during a conversation with a private TV news channel. A spokesman for the army’s media wing said the Pakistan Army was “closely monitoring” the situation in the region and “playing its role with utmost seriousness” for the successful outcome of the Afghan peace process.
He said Pakistan has left no stone unturned for the peace process but his country is “no guarantor”. DG ISPR said that it is ultimately up to the Afghans to decide how to proceed. He said Pakistan has the “largest stake” when it comes to peace in Afghanistan. Major General Iftikhar said the country has ‘fought a long battle against terror and has achieved success’.
Pakistan’s peace depends on Afghanistan
He said that very effective measures have been taken as per the vision of Army Chief General Bajwa. Speaking about the Afghan border, he said, “all illegal crossing points have been sealed” and the deployment of troops has been intensified at the notified points. DG ISPR said that the peace of Pakistan largely depends on the peace in Afghanistan. He said that as long as Afghanistan is peaceful and stable, it does not matter who is in power in Kabul.
Claims to have killed 42 terrorists
Major General Iftikhar said 150 incidents of terrorism have taken place in KP and Balochistan and security forces have conducted 7,500 operations in tribal districts and Balochistan. He said that 42 terrorists have been killed in these operations so far. He vowed that the armed forces would “never allow the enemies of peace and prosperity to succeed”. He said that our operation is going on with full force and terrorists are on the run.
Billions of dollars in loss to Pakistan
The army spokesman said the fight against terrorism has been fought “with the support of the nation” in the last 20 years. He said that Pakistan has lost billions of dollars in the war against terrorism. Talking about the fencing on the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan, he said that Afghanistan will also benefit from all the fences from Pakistan’s side. He said that it will promote peace and eliminate misunderstandings.
