The Lambda variant of Coronavirus is emerging as more dangerous than the Delta variant. The Ministry of Health of Malaysia has given this information. It reported that cases of lambda variants have been reported in more than 30 countries in the past four weeks. The Malaysian Health Ministry tweeted that the lambda variant first appeared in the South American country of Peru. Peru has the highest corona death rate in the world.
Citing the Australian news portal news.com.au, the Ministry of Health said that the lambda strain has also appeared in Britain. Because of this, researchers are concerned that this variant may be more dangerous than the delta variant. Euro News, citing the ‘Pan American Health Organization’ (PAHO), said that between May and June in Peru, 82 percent of new cases were due to lambda variants. In Chile, another South American country, 31 percent of cases between May and June were linked to lambda.
Lambda variant included in WHO’s ‘Variants of Interest’ list
The World Health Organization (WHO) has already designated lambda as a ‘variant of interest’. This has been done regarding its presence in South American countries. The world health body said that the lambda variant spreads rapidly and it can also fight antibodies. At the same time, ‘Public Health England’ (PHE) has included Lambda in the list of monitored variants (VUI). This has been done in view of its global spread and dangerous mutations, including conversion to L452Q and F490S.
Lambda variant not known to be less effective on vaccines
According to PHE, so far six cases of lambda variants have been reported in the UK. All these cases are related to foreign travel. According to UK health officials, there is currently no evidence that this variant causes more severe disease or makes current vaccines less effective. But PHE said that it is conducting tests in the lab to better understand the effect of the mutation on the behavior of the virus. The thing to note here is that this variant has not yet reached India.
