On Jordan’s political crisis, a new audio recording came out on Tuesday which indicated that the authorities tried to silence the former crown prince for a meeting with internal critics. This audio has also raised doubts over the claim that the former Prince was involved in a foreign conspiracy to destabilize the West-backed regime.
It seems that in this audio, the conversation of the explosive meeting between Yuvraj Hamza and the army chief has been recorded. After this meeting, differences between the top members of the royal family came to the fore. The meeting also indicated a deep tension between the Crown Prince and the security system, which might have strengthened the confrontation between King Abdula II and his half-brother.
What are the army chiefs saying in the recording?
This recording was done on Saturday and it came to light when a close mediator of Rajmahal and Yuvraj Hamza said that the royal family is in the process of resolving the crisis. Hours after this recording came to light, Jordan announced a moratorium on the publication of details related to the incident.
Army Chief General Yusuf Huniti had come to Yuvraj’s palace on Saturday to tell him that he was being kept under house arrest. In the recording, the army chief can be heard saying that the former crown prince is being punished for meeting with those who have begun to speak excessively.
Foreign Minister said, ‘Conspiracy failed’
On this, Yuvraj gets angry and alleges that the General is threatening him. In the audio, Yuvraj is seen saying that he does not have the right to order any member of the royal family. The Jordanian Foreign Minister on Sunday accused Yuvraj Hamza of conspiring with foreign elements out of ‘maliciousness’ and said that this posed a threat to national security.
Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi had said that the conspiracy was foiled. He said that it has become clear that he grew up with a special plan and was plotting. He said that 14-16 people have been arrested in addition to two senior officials of the Prince.
A day before the Foreign Minister’s statement, his half-brother Hamza of the ruler Abdullah II was put under house arrest. This is a rare public issue of discord within the ruling monarchy in Jordan. Hamza had denied being part of any conspiracy in a video message released on Saturday. He had accused corruption and inefficiency on power.
