In the billiards room, Maharaj Birendra of Nepal and the intoxicated armed Yuvraj Dipendra were face to face. Before people could understand something, Yuvraj raised the MP5-K submachine gun to his father and removed the bullets in his chest.
Prince Dipendra and King Birendra of Nepal
In Nepal, the evening of 1 June 2001 was normal. The Tribhuvan House of the palace of the King of Nepal, Narayanhiti, was illuminated by the lights of a party. This party was organized by the Crown Prince of Nepal, Dipendra. This party was started by Maharaja Birendra in 1972. It was organized on the third Friday of every month. This party was also part of a royal tradition, so it can be said that the evening of Nepal was still an ordinary evening but the sun of the next day was going to come out after a thick black night.
Yuvraj Deepender reached the billiards room at around quarter to seven. He was also accompanied by ADC Major Gajendra Bohra. He practiced some shots of billiards and offered a drink to his guest Maharaj Birendra’s brother-in-law and Maheshwar Kumar Singh, prince of the princely state of Surguja. After some time, Queen Aishwarya also reached the party. With him, the three sisters of the Maharaja Shobha, Shanti and Sharda had also reached the party. After seven o’clock, other members of the royal family including Yuvraj Dipendra also reached the party.
According to the BBC report, King Maharaj Birendra of Nepal arrived late for the party as he was giving an interview. Maharaj’s mother came to the party and sat in the room next to the billiards room. After this Maharaj Birendra reached the billiards room. He was alone because it was a private party of the royal family, so his ADC did not accompany him to the party. After some time, all the guests were shocked to see Yuvraj Dipendra drunk.
He was unable to stand properly and his tongue was also faltering. After a while he fell on the ground. Everyone was shocked to see this because Yuvraj did not drink alcohol for the first time. He used to manage himself by drinking a lot of liquor in the past. The people present at the party picked up Yuvraj and took him to his room and made him lie on the mattress lying on the floor.
Father was the first target
According to the report, Jonathan Gregson, the author of ‘Masker at the Palace’, has written in his book that the drunken Yuvraj in the room vomited a lot in the bathroom. He wore a military uniform, jacket, military boots and black leather gloves. He picked up a 9 mm pistol and MP5 submachine gun and M-16 rifle and headed to the billiards room, where the royal family party was going on. The party guests were shocked to see him in this form. Yuvraj’s aunt and Maharaj’s sister Ketaki Chester said that the women were talking among themselves that they were showing off their weapons.
In the billiards room, Maharaj Birendra of Nepal and the intoxicated armed Yuvraj Dipendra were face to face. Before people could understand anything, Yuvraj raised the MP5-K submachine gun towards his father and fired bullets in his chest. There was silence in the hall, everyone was shocked that what had happened? People thought that Yuvraj had done this unknowingly. According to Jonathan Gregson, Maharaj Birendra did not show any reaction, after some time he took a few steps towards the crown prince and Dipendra again fired three bullets in his body.
The bullets fired?
Yuvraj left the billiards room and went to the garden. Maharaj’s son-in-law Captain Rajeev Shahi ran and covered his neck with his coat where the bullet had hit him. Birender also pointed to the blood flowing from the wound in the stomach. Maharaj was conscious and in an injured condition said in Nepali – ‘K gardeko?’ That is, ‘What have you done?’
According to the report, Yuvraj Dipendra came again in the room. Now he had an M-16 rifle in his hand. In the BBC report quoting Ketki Chester, Deepender wanted to marry a girl of his choice while the royal family did not approve of it. They used to get less money according to their pocket money. Not only this, Queen Aishwarya had also threatened him that if he does not change the intention of his marriage, then he may have to lose the title of his crown prince.
Chef kicked on foot
Ketki tells that when his uncle Dhirendra came forward to stop Yuvraj present in the hall, Deependra fired at him too and he fell away. After this, all the people present in the party started firing bullets. During this, Ketki also got shot. Yuvraj then shot in the father’s head. Maharaj was lying downside down. His mouth was towards the ground and back up. The hatred for Maharaj in Yuvraj’s heart can be gauged from the fact that he stabbed Birendra with his feet to ensure that he was dead or alive. Ketki says that that scene shocked her deeply and she did not forget it till date.
In the firing that took three to four minutes, a dozen people had become targets of Deepender’s bullets. The surprising thing was that no one from the ADC tried to reach the palace a few steps away from this room, even though they were all equipped with training of crack commandos. However, on the basis of the report of the inquiry committee, all the four ADCs were dismissed.
last bullet yuvraj shot himself
Deepender then went to the garden and was followed by Queen Aishwarya and Prince Niranjan. After some time, both of them became the target of two bullets of Dipendra. According to the report, Nilesh Misra, the author of ‘End of the Line’, writes that the Queen was trying to climb the stairs towards Dipendra’s bedroom. Then a bullet crossed her head from behind and she fell down the stairs. He felt that Yuvraj would not shoot his mother.
Deepender was standing in the garden. He shouted and then shot himself the last bullet. The bullet crossed his head and went out from the other side. He fell on his back although he was not dead yet. Maharaj was also breathing. He had been hit by eight bullets. The ADC made him lie on the back seat of the car to take him to the hospital. He had almost lost his pulse but he was alive. He was going to the hospital in a blood-soaked condition in a Jaguar car. Queen Aishwarya was being taken to the hospital in the backseat. By the time he reached the hospital at 9.15 pm, the team of the best doctors of the country had reached the hospital.
beds lying in the hospital
The queen died as soon as she reached the hospital. Yuvraj Dipendra and Rajkumar Nirajan were brought to the hospital in the rear car. After some time, Rajkumar Nirajan was also declared dead. According to the BBC report, Dipendra had opened fire on so many people in the party that the beds in the hospital were short. When there was no empty bed of the trauma center for Dipendra, who arrived at the end, a preliminary investigation was started by laying him on the ground. He was alive but the pupils of his eyes had become inactive. He was immediately shifted to the operation theatre.
The next day nothing was published in the newspapers about this massacre. After 14 hours of the massacre, it was announced that Maharaj died and Dipendra would become the king. It was said in the message that Maharaj Dipendra is not in a position to take over the throne, so Rajkumar Gyanendra will take over as the regent.
Breakthrough after becoming king for 54 hours
However, no information was made public about how Maharaj died. Thousands of people from Kathmandu attended the funeral procession of his Maharaja Birendra. People across the country got shaved in mourning. Yuvraj Dipendra, who came to his senses on June 4, was also declared dead and Dipendra, the killer of his father who became the king of Nepal for 54 hours, died without regaining consciousness. After this, though Birendra’s younger brother Gyanendra became king, but then the monarchy in Nepal could not be stabilized and finally in 2008 democracy was restored in Nepal.
