The military regime has taken this step amid the increasing number of people killed in the stern action being taken to control the protests against Myanmar Protests Against Military Coup.
Sunday has been one of the most violent days, as at least 38 people have died in action against demonstrations, according to the ‘Assistance Association for Political Prescribers’, an independent group that monitors the number of people killed in the violence. While many other people have been injured (Myanmar Protests Background). According to the group, the maximum number of 34 people have died in Yangon and martial law has been enforced in two townships of Haliang Thar Yar and neighboring Shwepiyata.
22 people died on Sunday
An alleged video has emerged of Haliang Thar Yar Township, in which people are running and there are sounds of firing. The footage released by the Independent Democratic Vice of Burma shows people who are running away carrying an injured person while trying to sensitize two others, one of whom looks dead or dead (Myanmar Protests Killed). According to the support group, Hlaing Thar Yar is the area where 22 civilians died on Sunday, while dozens of people were injured and a large number of junta forces were deployed in the area.
Emergency imposed since six weeks
The emergency has been in force for the past six weeks following the coup in Myanmar, but late Sunday evening, government broadcaster MRTV first mentioned the martial law, which appears to have taken the responsibility of security directly into the hands of the military rather than the local police ( Myanmar Protests Reason). The declaration stated that the regional commander of Yangon has been given administrative, judicial and military powers in the area under his control to restore security and law and order (Myanmar Coup Explained). Under martial law, military forces are given the right to control the area concerned.
