Marks & Spencer is to cease promoting disposable barbecues in all of its UK shops.
Amid a summer time that has seen record-breaking temperatures and exceptionally dry circumstances, the retailer stated it needed to “help protect open spaces and reduce the risk of fires”.
M&S tweeted: “We’d already stopped selling disposable barbecues near national parks and in London but given the unusually hot and dry conditions, we’ve taken the precautionary step of removing them from sale across the UK.”
London Fire Brigade (LFB), which has been calling for a ban on disposable barbecues, stated it was “good news”.
On Twitter, LFB added: “We want to work with retailers to stop the sale of disposable barbecues and reduce the risk of dangerous grass fires.”
London’s Fire Commissioner Andy Roe has written to native authorities asking for a short lived ban on the usage of barbecues in all public parks and open areas.
The tinder-dry circumstances throughout the UK have fuelled quite a few wildfires, a few of which have destroyed properties and crops, and prompted requires a ban on the disposable barbecues behind most of the blazes.
It comes after it was revealed elements of England have had their driest July since data started, in keeping with provisional figures from the Met Office.
