The company studied 3700 children in the age group of 12 to 17 years. Initial results showed that Vaccine works on the protection of the immune system of adolescents just like Adults.
Moderna claimed on Tuesday that her anti-COVID-19 vaccine is effective on adults as well as children who are 12 years old. With this, this vaccine is on the way to become the second option of vaccine in America for this age group. The shortage of the global supply of vaccines (Vaccine Supply) is still intact and most of the countries of the world are struggling in immunization of adults for epidemic mitigation.
The US and Canada, however, earlier this month approved another vaccine – manufactured by Pfizer and BioNtech – to be given to people over the age of 12 years. Maderna is in line for the approval and said he would submit his data pertaining to the juvenile to the US Food and Drug Administration and other global regulators early next month.
Better initial results
The company studied 3700 children in the age group of 12 to 17 years. Initial results showed that the vaccine works on the protection of the immune system of adolescents as in adults and similar temporary side effects such as swelling, headache and fatigue in the arm are also seen. COVID-19 was not found among those taking two doses of Maderna vaccine, whereas four cases were found in children who were given dummy vaccines.
316 children died so far
The company said in a press release that it was 93 percent effective two weeks after the first dose. Children have a significantly lower risk of falling ill with COVID-19 than adults, but they represent 14 percent of the country’s coronavirus cases. According to data from the American Academy of Pediatrics, at least 316 children have died in the US alone.
Teenagers reaching vaccination center
After getting approval from the regulator, a large number of teenagers are reaching vaccination centers in the US to get Pfizer vaccinated. The effort is to get more and more teenagers vaccinated before the next academic session. Both Pfizer and Maderna have started vaccination testing of children from 11 years to six months.
