The pharmaceutical company Merck has announced an agreement with five generic drug makers in India for the production of molanupiravir, an antiviral tablet believed to be similar to the drug Ravadecivir of COVID-19. The final phase of this drug has just begun in the US and it is not clear when this drug will be used in India or elsewhere (Molnupiravir). Studies conducted on this drug have shown encouraging results, which showed that the virus levels drop rapidly after its use immediately after becoming infected.
‘Comprehensive Use on Patients’
It is widely used on some patients admitted to hospitals, but it has to be injected, due to which its use is limited (Molnupiravir Approval Status). Professor George Painter of Emory University has helped in the discovery of this drug. According to him, Molanupiravir appears to be effective against many types of respiratory viruses. Merck Ridgeback is developing molnupiravir in association with biotherapeutics.
