Babara Jarabika, the alleged girlfriend of fugitive diamond merchant Mehul Choksi, has claimed that she was not involved in Choksi’s abduction. In an interview with India Today, Zarabika said that during my visit to Antigua and Barbuda last year, Mehul Choksi approached me and introduced himself as ‘Raj’. Significantly, Choksi disappeared from Antigua on 23 May and was then arrested in Dominica on 26 May.
Babara Jarabika said, ‘I was Choksi’s friend. Choksi introduced himself as Raj and contacted me during my visit last year. He became friendly with me and later he started flirting. He also presented me with diamond rings and bracelets which turned out to be fake. Babara Jarabika said that his name was dragged by Choksi’s lawyers and his family members in this case. He said, ‘I have nothing to do with Choksi’s kidnapping. My name is being dragged by the lawyer and family members of Mehul Choksi. Me and my family are under stress now.
Choksi had accused of kidnapping from Jarabika’s house
On the other hand, in his letter to Antigua Police, the fugitive businessman has alleged that he was kidnapped from the house of Babara Jarabica and taken to Dominica in a boat. He has even claimed that two Indians were also on board the boat allegedly smuggled by him from Antigua and Barbuda. Choksi alleged that Jarabika befriended his employees and used to accompany him for walks in the evening.
Choksi alleges, beaten up at Jarabika’s house
The fugitive businessman further said that Babara Jarabika asked him to pick him up from his house on 23 May. Mehul Choksi alleged that on reaching Jarabika’s house at 5:15 pm, she was thrashed fiercely by 8-10 people. The people who beat him claimed that he was from Antigua Police. Choksi claimed, ‘The thrashers told me that they had come to take me to St. John’s police station. But when I protested and requested to contact my lawyers first, they stopped me and started beating me from all sides.
Jarabika did not inform the police about my beating: Choksi
Mehul Choksi further said, ‘I was unable to resist and was barely conscious because of his brutal beating. Then they took my phone, Rolex watch and wallet. They said they didn’t want to rob me and returned me the money that was dead at that time, which was about $1500.’ Choksi said that Jarabika did not make any effort to save him or alert the police. Which is proof that she was part of this kidnapping plan.
