madrid: Six people died due to fire in a nursing home in Spain. Officials gave this information on Wednesday. Valencia regional chief Shimo Puig said 17 more people were hospitalized, including three in critical condition.
Fire department officials said they rescued 25 of a total of 70 patients evacuated from a nursing home in the municipality of Moncada, north of Valencia. Officials have not given the cause of the fire. Fire chief Jose Bassett told Spanish news agency EFE that the fire appeared to have started in a bedroom on the second floor. He said when firefighters arrived, “there were a large number of people trapped in the fire asking for help.”

Puig said Spain’s Civil Guard police force was investigating the cause of the fire. But investigators believe that the fire was caused by a short circuit in the electrical equipment attached to the oxygen tank. “The most important thing now is the speedy recovery of the injured,” he said. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has expressed his condolences to the families of the victims of the incident. Sanchez tweeted in Spanish, “Received the sad news of Moncada. My condolences to the families of the victims. We wish the injured a speedy recovery. All possible help will be given to the families and the city.”
Municipal authorities in Moncada have called for three days of mourning, with the flag flying at half-mast at the town hall building. Officials called for a minute’s silence in memory of the victims in the afternoon local time.
