Wreckage of missing Russian plane found on beach (AFP)
Russia’s state-run aviation agency said part of its plane, which went missing in the far eastern region of Kamchatka on Tuesday, was found on the Okhotsk beach, five kilometers from the runway of the airport where the plane was supposed to land. An Antonov AN-26 plane with 22 passengers and six crew members flying from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to the city of Palana disappeared from radar and lost contact before landing.
Kamchatka governor Vladimir Solodov told the Interfax news agency that the main part of the plane was found on the beach, while the rest of the broken part was found in the sea near the shore. According to Russian media reports, none of the 28 people on board the plane survived the crash.
There was nothing wrong with the plane
The aircraft belonged to the Kamchatka Aviation Enterprise Company. According to the news of the Russian state news agency Tass, the plane had been serving since 1982. The company’s director, Alexei Khabarov, told Interfax news agency that there was no technical fault in the plane. According to the news of the official RIA Novotsi news agency, several ships were also searching for the plane.
The head of the Palana government was on the plane
The city of Palana is located on the Okhotsk beach. A Kamchatka government spokesman said the plane was about to land but lost contact with it about 10 kilometers (six miles) from Palana’s airport. The head of Palana’s local government, Olga Mokhreva, was on board the plane. According to TAS news, the Antonov An-28 aircraft of Kamchatka Aviation Enterprise crashed in a mountainous area before landing in Palana in 2012 while taking off from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
Russia’s tough weather challenges planes
There were 14 people on the plane in that accident, out of which 10 died. The traces of alcohol were found in the blood samples of both the pilots killed in the incident. Russia, once known for its plane-related accidents, has made record improvements in its air traffic safety over the past few years. However, poor maintenance of the aircraft and low level of safety standards still persist. Apart from this, flying in different areas of the country with difficult weather conditions is also very dangerous.
