Parliamentary elections have been held four times in the last two years amid the political crisis in Israel. Opponents of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have until midnight on Wednesday to form a new coalition government.
Isaac Herzog Elected as 11th President of Israel: Isaac Herzog, a veteran politician and belonging to Israel’s prominent family, has become the new President of the country. The role of this post in the country remains mostly ceremonial. Herzog was elected president in a secret ballot held on Tuesday in Israel’s 120-member Knesset. Academician Miriam Peretz stood in front of him. Herzog, 60, is a former head of Israel’s Labor Party and opposition leader, who contested the 2013 parliamentary election against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu but failed.
He will replace the current president, Reuven Rivlin, whose term ends next month. Herzog belongs to a prominent Israeli Jewish family. His father, Siam Herzog, was Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations before being elected president. His uncle was Israel’s first foreign minister and served as the Israeli ambassador to the United Nations and the United States. His grandfather was Israel’s first chief rabbi (Jewish religious leader).
more likely to win
Herzog played the role of the head of the Jewish Agency. This agency is a non-profit organization that works with the government to encourage immigration to Israel (Isaac Herzog Elected as President). He has been working with this agency for the last three years after resigning from the Parliament. He has deep ties to the political establishment. His chances of winning were being predicted even before the voting. In Israel, the president is formally the head of state and after parliamentary elections, communication with political parties is his main responsibility to form the government.
elections have been held four times
Parliamentary elections have been held four times in the last two years amid the political crisis in Israel. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s opponents have a chance until midnight Wednesday to form a new coalition government, and if they fail, the country will once again be in for a mid-term election. The president also has the power to grant pardons and this is a very sensitive matter at the moment as several corruption cases against Netanyahu are going on.
