Taiwan receives vaccine from USA (AFP)
The US has sent 2.5 million doses of Moderna’s anti-COVID-19 vaccine to Taiwan on Sunday. Along with helping in the field of public health, this consignment also has its geopolitical implications. The consignment arrived by a cargo plane of Taipei China Airlines. A day earlier, this consignment was dispatched from Memphis, America.
Top US officials in Taiwan Brent Christensen and Taiwan’s Health Minister Chen Shi-chung were present to welcome the consignment at the airport outside the capital Taipei. The American Institute in Taiwan wrote on its Facebook page that the consignment reflects America’s commitment to Taiwan as a trusted friend and a member of the international family of democracy.
Taiwan has survived the epidemic
This institution is in a way the embassy of America in Taiwan. Taiwan was in a way saved from the outbreak of the epidemic, but since May there has been an increase in the cases of infection and now doses of vaccines are being ordered from outside. Taiwan had ordered the purchase of 5.5 million vaccines directly from Moderna, but so far it has received only 390,000 vaccines.
The help provided by the US in the time of increasing pressure on Taiwan by China shows its cooperation. China has been claiming Taiwan as its own. The US does not have formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan. The US earlier this month promised Taiwan 750,000 doses of the vaccine.
Chinese incursions into Taiwan’s territory
On Thursday, once again Chinese infiltration was seen in the Taiwan area. Seven warplanes of the Chinese Air Force entered the ‘Air Defense Identification Zone’ of the island. Earlier, the People’s Liberation Army had sent 28 aircraft to the territory of Taiwan. This information was given in the report of South China Morning Post.
Observers said that China’s latest incursion into Taiwanese territory was aimed at testing two new-generation aircraft. It also aimed to tackle electronic interference, he said. China carried out this incursion through two new models of J-16 fighter jets, four J-7 fighter jets and one Y-8 electric warfare fighter ship.
