    Ireland’s Prime Minister has apologised for a remark apparently referencing Bill Clinton’s affair with Monica Lewinsky throughout a speech in Washington.

    Leo Varadkar was addressing the Washington Ireland Programme and was talking of his expertise as an intern within the American capital in 2000, in the course of the presidency of Bill Clinton.

    It was two years after information of the president’s affair with the White House intern rocked the world, and ultimately led to his impeachment trial.

    Speaking at the moment, the Irish chief jokingly remarked that he was interning within the US capital at a time “when some parents would have had cause for concern about what would happen to interns in Washington.”

    The remark was greeted by some laughter within the room, however was shortly seen as an embarrassing mis-step, particularly because the Clintons are as a result of go to Ireland subsequent month as a part of the Good Friday Agreement twenty fifth anniversary celebrations.

    A spokesperson for Mr Varadkar later issued an apology to the travelling press pack.

    “He made an ill-judged off-the-cuff remark which he regrets. He apologises for any offence caused to anyone concerned.”
