Ebrahim Raisi: Ever since the radical Ibrahim Raisi became the new president, there were speculations that Iran’s relations with America could deteriorate further. These things are being proved true by Raisi’s statement.
US President Joe Biden and Iran’s President Ibrahim Raisi (Joe Biden-Ebrahim Raisi)
Ebrahim Raisi on Joe Biden: Iran’s newly elected President Ibrahim Raisi has said he does not want to compromise on Tehran’s ballistic missile program, nor does he want to negotiate on the issue of regional militias. Raisi said that he does not want to meet even US President Joe Biden. When asked if there is a possibility of meeting Biden, he said, ‘No.’ Meanwhile, Raisi described himself as a “defender of human rights” when asked whether he was involved in the 1988 massacre of nearly 5,000 people.
Raisi was part of a so-called ‘death panel’ that punished political prisoners after the end of the Iran-Iraq war in the late 1980s (Ebrahim Raisi on Joe Biden). He said these things in the first press conference on Monday after winning the elections with a huge majority on Friday. “The United States is obliged to withdraw all stringent sanctions against Iran,” he said. In the press conference that lasted for about an hour, he looked a little nervous at first but later returned to normal.
Raisi’s refusal to compromise
Asked about Iran’s ballistic program and its support for regional militias, Raisi said there could be “no compromise” on these issues. Iran relies on regional militias such as Yemen’s Houthi and Lebanon’s Hezbollah to maintain balance against enemies such as Saudi Arabia and Israel (US Iran Relations After 1979). Tehran has fighter jets from before the Islamic Revolution of 1979. Because of which it is investing in missiles against regional Arab neighbors. Its neighboring Arab countries have bought weapons worth billions of dollars from the US in the last few years.
The White House did not make any statement
On meeting Biden, Raisi said ‘no’. His election rival, Abdulnasir Himmatti, had said during the campaign that he probably wanted to meet with Biden. The White House has yet to react to Raisi’s statement on Monday (US Iran Relations Today). Raisi, a confidant of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been banned by the US for his involvement in the genocide.
Millions of people did not vote
His victory on Friday was among the lowest turnout in the history of the Islamic republic (Ebrahim Raisi in Iran Elections). Millions of Iranian citizens did not turn out to vote, which has been instrumental in Raisi’s victory. Raisi’s victory comes at a time when several governments in Vienna are trying to salvage talks in 2015 to limit Iran’s nuclear program. His victory has drawn lines of concern for this agreement.
