Maldives Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid on Thursday praised India’s steps to provide vaccines to other countries to deal with the Corona Virus Epidemic. He said that this is a great example of how multilateralism and the idea of ’global village’ should be implemented. In a session of a discussion titled ‘Beyond COVID: Global Public Health After the Pandemic’, he spoke at a Raisina Samvad organized digitally in New Delhi. Shahid said that the first and foremost lesson learned from the epidemic is the importance of multilateralism and that “we are a global village and cannot live separately”.
He said that we need to unite our efforts to face these global challenges. Initially it was commendable for the international community to come together to face the epidemic. However, Shahid said that as the epidemic progressed and vaccination started. Unity was also seen in the challenge of dealing with the challenge.
‘India gives hope to international community’
Praising India for providing vaccines to other countries, he said that India has given hope to the international community by becoming an example of multilateralism and how a global village should work. Shahid, who came on a two-day visit to India, said, “The way India has run its vaccination program not only in India but across the world, India has opened its hands and hearts, it is commendable and exemplary.”
‘Bilateral cooperation likely to gain further momentum’
According to a statement by the Ministry of External Affairs, the visit of the Foreign Minister of Maldives to India is likely to give further momentum to the close bilateral cooperation between the two countries. It said that during his visit, Shahid will hold talks with Foreign Minister S Jaishankar on Friday in which there will be a detailed discussion on bilateral, regional and international issues related to mutual interests. Maldives is India’s close shipping partner in the Indian Ocean Region and holds an important position in the Prime Minister’s ‘Sagar’ approach (Security and Growth for All in the Region).
