The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund has approved an expansion of US $ 650 billion in resources to help economically weaker nations in the fight against the corona virus epidemic. IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said on Friday that the new aid, the largest of its kind in the history of the lending institution to 190 nations, would be “an encouraging aid to the world”.
To put into context the size of the funding expansion, the IMF approved a $250 billion increase in SDR reserves after the 2008 financial crisis. This was contrary to the stance adopted by the Trump administration and it began in February when the Biden administration launched efforts behind it.
Republican members objected
Republican members of Congress objected to the funding, saying the IMF’s expanded resources would benefit America’s enemies such as China, Russia and Iran. However, international relief agencies strongly supported this help. On the other hand, the White House said that the US is sending 1.5 million anti-Covid-19 vaccines to Nepal and 500,000 to Bhutan.
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters in a press conference on Friday that today we are sending 3 million vaccines to Indonesia, 1.5 million to Nepal, 500,000 to Moldova and 500,000 to Bhutan. In response to a question, he said, ‘We are not giving vaccines only to certain countries. We are providing vaccines around the world to save lives and contribute to the global effort to fight the pandemic.
America sent about 15 million vaccines this week
With these consignments, Saki said that this week alone, the US has sent about 15 million vaccines to several countries including Guatemala, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, Afghanistan and Vietnam. He said that apart from giving vaccines to Indonesia, the US is also planning to help it deal with COVID-19.
He said, ‘I would like to state that America is the country that has contributed the most in fighting the epidemic. The President has made it clear that from here we will go further and we are working to build manufacturing capacity around the world and in the US.
