Hong Kong Police said on Tuesday that they have arrested nine people on suspicion of involvement in terrorist activities, after busting a conspiracy to make explosives and plant bombs in the city. The arrest comes amid politically divisive times in Hong Kong. The anti-government protests that took place here about two years ago shook the city.
This protest went on for months. Last week, a Hong Kong man attacked a police officer with a knife before killing himself. Police said six of the nine people arrested were secondary school students. Let us tell you that these people were trying to make explosive ‘Triacetone Triperoxide’ (TATP) in a hostel.
intent to terrify the courts
His plan was to put these TATPs in city courts, cross-harbour tunnels, railway stations, roadside dustbins, ‘so as to cause maximum harm to the society.’ Lee Kwai-wah, senior superintendent of the Hong Kong Police’s National Security Department, said five men and four women, aged between 15 and 39, were among those arrested. Equipment and raw material used to make TATP have also been recovered.
The last pro-democracy newspaper closed
On one hand, while the people of Hong Kong are shedding their blood for democracy and registering a protest against China, on the other hand, China is continuously strengthening its hold here. Recently, the State Council of China has appointed Hong Kong’s Security Chief John Lee to the post of Chief Secretary. At the same time, Chris Tang Ping-kyung, currently holding the post of Police Commissioner, has been made the new Security Secretary.
Recently, Hong Kong’s last pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily has also been closed forever. The people working here were put in jail and they were accused of anti-national activities. Many people have been arrested under the national security law implemented by China about a year ago. Lakhs of people demonstrated against this law. But China also suppressed these protests. Britain and America have issued a statement regarding the closure of Apple Daily and called it sad news for the media.
