World’s Oldest Ornament Discovered in Germany: Archaeologists in Germany have discovered a jewel which is said to be the world’s oldest jewel. Researchers say that this jewel is 51 thousand years old. Its discovery shows that Neanderthals also tried to look beautiful like the people of today’s era. The team of the State Service for Cultural Heritage in Hannover, Germany, said that it has been made very meticulously.
Archaeologists have found this jewel near the entrance of the Unicorn Cave located in the foothills of the Harz mountains in Germany. A flat base was built to hold it here (World’s Oldest Ornament Used by Neanderthals). Looking at it, it seems that Neanderthals used it for body decoration and it was much bigger and wider than today’s jewelry. Regarding this artifact, archaeologists have said that bone is used to make jewellery.
How were jewelry made?
To remove the hardness of this bone, it was first boiled. So that a design can be made from carving on it. Dr Dirk Leder, the leader of this study, says, ‘This is a good example of their cognitive ability, which can be given in the context of Neanderthals (Oldest Ornament in World). This thing looks even more interesting with the pattern on it, which is very clean and the carving is done to a great depth. It would have taken 90 minutes to carve the chevron. Six different lines have also been engraved on the bone.
What is the size and weight?
At the same time, looking at the marks carved in this bone, it is known that they are from half an inch to an inch long. The artwork is about two and a half inches long, one and a half inches wide. Whereas its weight is only one ounce or more. Neanderthals were very advanced. Doctor Ladder says, ‘The deer used to be very big at that time. Which were found in the areas north of the Alps. This discovery also shows the understanding of extinct species. The study has been published in the journal Nature Ecology and Evolution.
