International Monetary Fund (IMF) Chief Economist Gita Gopinath has been promoted. She is soon going to become the first woman Deputy Managing Director (FDMC) of the IMF. She will replace Geoffrey Okamoto in this position. Geoffrey Okamoto is planning to leave the IMF early next year. Gopinath was supposed to return to her academic position at Harvard University in January 2022, but has now decided not to leave. Gopinath has worked for three years as the Chief Economist of the IMF.
IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said, “Geoffrey and Geeta are both wonderful collaborators – I am sad to see Geoffrey leaving, but at the same time, I am glad that Geeta has stayed with us and accepted the new responsibility as FDMD. has decided.” Georgieva said that Gopinath has done a very good job in the IMF.
