At least 15 people, including a journalist and a political activist, were killed in a shooting on a main street in Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince. National Police Chief Leon Charles gave this information on Wednesday. He said that the investigation of this late night attack is going on. He did not give more details nor did he say whether the attack was carried out by one person or that several attackers opened fire.
In Delmas 32, bodies were found scattered on the sidewalk along a main road. This area is a congested area within the capital which is Port au Prince. Leon Charles said the shooting happened in the area where a spokesman for a group of disgruntled police officers called Phantom 509 had been murdered a few hours earlier. He blamed the associates of Phantom 509 for the mass murder. But did not give any evidence to prove his point true.
Phantom 509 did not comment on the attack
Haiti’s National Police chief Charles said the police could not tolerate these acts of retaliation in any form. On the other hand, members of Phantom 509 did not immediately comment on the incident. Among the dead were Diego Charles, who worked for Radio Vision 2000, and political activist Antoinette Duclaire.
US condemns attack
Many people in Haiti are shocked by this murder. This murder has come at a time when gang violence has increased rapidly in recent months. The US Embassy condemned the attack and said it was deeply concerned about the loss of life and general insecurity. It said the US urges the government of Haiti to protect its citizens by combating the spread of gangs and by holding perpetrators of violence and their allies accountable.
