Elephants havoc in China
In China, a herd of wild elephants has reached near the city of Kunming, which has a population of 7 million. In view of this, the authorities have closed the roads and neighboring areas keeping in view the safety of both animals and people. This herd includes 15 elephants, which are being closely monitored by drones. Officials have appealed to the people of those areas to stay indoors where herds of elephants are roaming and blocking the roads. The situation in Kunming city has become like a lockdown.
The Xinhua News Agency reported on Thursday that the herd of elephants had reached Jinning district on the banks of Kunming, the capital of Yunnan province, by late Wednesday night. So far, these elephants have walked for 500 kilometers and have caused destruction in many places. Due to their arrival in Kunming, this city with a population of 70 lakhs is under threat. This herd of elephants has fled from the nature reserve located in the southwest of Yunnan province.
Loss of one million dollars so far
Originally there were sixteen elephants in the herd, although the government maintains that two returned home and a baby elephant was born during the walk. According to official reports, the herd now includes six female elephants and three male elephants, three juvenile elephants and three calf elephants. There are currently no reports of any elephant casualties, but reports say that the elephants have destroyed crops for nearly $1 million. When and how the elephants will be returned to the reserve, it is not clear at the moment.
Elephants have reached Kunming city by wandering the way
Elephants are the largest land animals in Asia and can weigh up to 5 metric tons. The Chinese Wildlife Administration says they do not know why these elephants left the nature reserve last year. This reserve is located near the city of Puere, which is famous for its tea plantations. A Chinese expert told that this is the biggest migration event in the history of China so far. It is believed that the leader of the elephants is inexperienced, due to which this herd deviated from the path.
