There is no shortage of food enthusiasts all over the world, a large number of those who eat non-vegetarians. But you will be surprised to know that there is such a thing as food, which can lead to jail. We are talking about a seafood from Britain, which is related to some rules. Breaking these rules can also result in a fine on a person.
The name of this seafood is Guernsey Ormers. It is found in Guernsey, one of the Channel Islands of the English Channel, near the French coast. Which comes under the control of Britain. Ormurs are a special type of shellfish, which have traditionally been collected from the island for centuries.
Ormers are also called European Abalone. Which is similar in appearance to sea snail but its size is slightly smaller than snail. Its meat is used in many types of dishes. But suddenly there was a considerable decrease in their number, due to which some restrictions were placed on collecting them.
Now only between January and April, they can be collected from here. During this time, only 24 days are such, when the orders are allowed to be taken from here to eat. That is, only 24 days in a year, that too on full moon days and new moon days. This is the reason that this seafood i.e. seafood is available in the market only a few days.
In the sixties, there was an increased risk of extinction of ormers. But then in the 1970s, there was a ban on diving here and collecting ormers. They can be taken in limited numbers only for a few days between January and April, even when they are longer than 8 cm.
Since these are available in the market for a short time only, so people’s preference for them has increased significantly. In the 24 days in which they are allowed to be taken, even then they can be taken in limited quantities. After collecting it, permission also has to be taken to take it from here.
Only a very small amount of orders are exported to Japan, where it is sold at a high price. It takes 3 to 4 years for an ornament to grow up to 9 cm and it becomes 15.5 cm when fully developed. It can live for more than 15 years.
There is also a restriction related to the ormers that people who come to take it, cannot directly put their hands in the water nor can they hold them in the wetsuit. Breaking any rule is considered a crime and a fine of up to five thousand pounds (about five lakh rupees) can be imposed. Also, there can be jail for up to six months.
