Floods have caused devastation in the state of New South Wales on the east coast of Australia. The flood water has reached dozens of towns, after which people have been evacuated from there. Thousands of people have had to leave their homes and take shelter in relief camps due to the incessant rains.
In New South Wales, around 18,000 people have been evacuated to safe places till Monday. Due to the incessant rains till Wednesday, emergency services fear that about 54 thousand people may have to be displaced.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison said in Parliament that contact with 35 communities in northern New South Wales was lost. In such a situation, relief and rescue teams have carried out about 700 flood operations and took these people out safely. The PM said, we should be thankful that so far no one has died due to floods. But the risk of the foundation of buildings being weakened due to flood water and the trees and roads being damaged due to high flow of water is high.
The floods in some areas of New South Wales are the result of heavy rains occurring once in 50 to 100 years. The head of state Gladys Berejikilian has said that 38 parts of the state have been declared as natural disaster areas.
Gladys Berejikilian said, I do not know any such time in the history of our state, where we have to face this kind of weather in the midst of the epidemic. Thus, it is a challenging time for New South Wales.
Thousands of people have been affected by flooding and danger orders in the state’s northern coast and western Sydney. The houses have been submerged in water and the roads have turned into ponds. The power of many areas has been lost.
